Tattoo Aftercare Guide
Your new tattoo is a permanent piece of art—but how it heals depends on how well you take care of it in the days and weeks after your appointment. Follow these steps to protect your ink and ensure proper healing.
Immediately After Your Tattoo
Leave the bandage on: Your artist will cover the tattoo with a sterile bandage or plastic wrap. Leave this on for 2–4 hours (unless told otherwise).
Wash your hands first: Always wash your hands with antibacterial soap before touching your tattoo.
Gently clean the tattoo: After removing the bandage, wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your fingers—not a washcloth or sponge.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel: Do not rub or use cloth towels, which can harbor bacteria.
First Few Days
Apply a thin layer of ointment: Use a recommended ointment such as Aquaphor or a specialized tattoo aftercare product Apply a thin layer once a day.
Switch to unscented lotion: After a few days, switch to a fragrance-free, alcohol-free lotion like Palmer’s Cocoa Butter or Aveeno to keep the area moisturized without clogging pores.
Weeks 1–2: What to Expect
Peeling and itching is normal: Your tattoo will begin to flake or peel like a sunburn. Do not scratch or pick at it. This can cause scarring or ink loss.
Keep it clean and moisturized: Wash your tattoo once or twice daily and moisturize as needed.
Avoid soaking: No baths, hot tubs, or swimming pools for at least 2–3 weeks. Quick showers are fine.
Avoid tight clothing: Let your tattoo breathe and avoid fabric that rubs against it excessively.
Weeks 3–4 and Beyond
Avoid direct sun exposure: Sun can fade a fresh tattoo. Once healed, always use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect it.
Watch for signs of infection: Redness, swelling, pus, or excessive heat can be signs of infection. Contact your artist or a medical professional if you notice any unusual symptoms.
Touch-ups may be needed: Once fully healed, you might need a touch-up if any spots faded or healed unevenly. This is normal and usually included in the cost (check with your artist).
Things to Avoid During Healing
❌ Picking or scratching the tattoo
❌ Applying heavy ointments or petroleum jelly such as Vaseline
❌ Using scented lotions or harsh soaps
❌ Exposing to direct sunlight or tanning beds
❌ Submerging in water (baths, pools, oceans)
❌ Wearing dirty or tight clothing over the tattoo
Final Tips
Healing times vary by person and placement, but most tattoos take about 2–4 weeks to fully heal.
Be patient. A well-healed tattoo is worth the effort.
Always follow any specific instructions given by your tattoo artist—they know your skin and their ink best.
